Ukraine: Fields of Gold

UKRAINIAN PROVERBS

The obliging fool is worse than an enemy.

No matter how hard you try, a bull will never give milk.

Women and dogs set men together by their ears.

A husband wants to have a healthy wife; a brother wants to have a rich sister.

The church is near, but the way is icy. The tavern is far, but I will walk carefully.

Borrowed bread lies heavy on the stomach.

The fatter the flea the leaner the dog.

You don’t really see the world if you only look through your own window.

  1. Why do they call Ukraine the breadbasket of Europe?

Its black soil is richly fertile. Its farmland is cheaper to run than that in Europe and the US. And its deep seaports have given it easy access to international markets. The combination has allowed Ukraine to become a key exporter of agricultural commodities, and to be described as the breadbasket of Europe.Apr
