Under the neon glow of an East Vancouver dance hall, G.I. Joe leaned toward Madonna and laughed.
“My uncle just wants to dance,” Joe said. “The rumba, the cha-cha, the tango — whatever keeps the heart alive.”
The band played softly while old couples spun across the floor like survivors from another age. Joe watched them carefully.
“You know,” he told Madonna, “there’s safety in numbers. In the wild and in real life. Human beings were never meant to be isolated from each other.”
Madonna nodded as the trumpet section carried the melody through the hall.
“That’s why I’m trying to build something better,” Joe continued. “A neighborhood where everybody belongs. LGBTQ people, immigrants, musicians, families, old pensioners, working people — all looking out for one another instead of treating life like a war.”
Madonna smiled. “You make it sound like a dance collective mixed with a republic.”
Joe laughed. “Maybe that’s exactly what society should be. I admire constitutional republics where everybody has rights protected equally. No one gets shoved into some far-left or far-right camp. Once people stop talking and stop dancing together, they start fearing each other.”
Outside, rain shimmered against the windows while the dance floor stayed warm and alive.
“My uncle understands something modern politics forgot,” Joe said. “Most people don’t wake up wanting conflict. They want music, community, food on the table, and people around them they can trust.”
Madonna raised her glass. “That sounds more revolutionary than half the manifestos out there.”
Joe grinned and offered his hand dramatically.
“Come on, Madonna. Civilization survives when people stick together. And if we’re going to save it, we might as well save it dancing the tango.”
